The CAN, has distanced itself from Archbishop Chivir Chianson after he declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the head of the CAN, made it clear that Chianson does not work for CAN, is not their secretary, and has zero right to use their name or speak for them.

He also made it clear that Chianson’s group is not connected to CAN.

The association said it had not approved any political mobilisation in its name.

It warned people not to treat Chianson’s political views as CAN’s position.

It said it would stay neutral ahead of the 2027 elections, and would keep holding political leaders to account regardless of party.

CAN also asked Christians and media houses to ignore any claim that Chianson or his group speaks for the body.

It urged journalists to check the credentials of anyone presented as a CAN representative.

The row started when Chianson said Tinubu would win the 2027 presidential election, which he described as a prophetic message from God.

Chianson, who is Secretary General of the Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, said his group had been holding prayer sessions for the success of the Tinubu administration.

He added that the support would not stop them from speaking out on national issues.

CAN said neither Chianson nor the Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has the authority to present their political stance as the association’s official position.
