According to Zubair Jamali, the home minister of Balochistan, the death toll from a suicidal bomb blast at a religious procession in Pakistan’s Balochistan province has risen to at least 25. “At least 25 people were killed and more than 80 injured – including 20 critically injured people,” said Jamali.
The explosion occurred as people gathered for a procession celebrating the birthday of Prophet Mohammed, according to the Assistant Commissioner of Mastung district. Local media had earlier reported that six people had lost their lives and over 30 were injured in a blast near a mosque in Balochistan province on Friday.
The country’s interior ministry confirmed a blast carried out by “terrorist elements”.
According to a statement, the attack on individuals taking part in the Eid Milad-ul-Nabi procession was a heinous act. Jan Achakzai, the Minister for Information in Balochistan, reported on Twitter that the number of casualties was rising. While most Islamic sects recognize the commemoration of the prophet’s birthday, some groups view it as an unnecessary addition.
