According to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the National Economic Council has advised the Nigeria Labour Congress to wait for President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day speech on October 1st.
The governor stated that Tinubu would address their demands and other issues during his speech. The organized labor leadership has been encouraged to exercise patience and allow more time for dialogue with the Federal Government. It is suggested that the Nigeria Labour Congress await the speech before taking any actions.
According to Mr Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, the Nigerian Labour Congress previously stated that there was no agreement made with the government to delay the impending strike that was set to begin next Tuesday.
The NLC also clarified that no meetings had been planned with the government to discuss the proposed suspension of the strike. “We have not made any deals with the government to halt the planned strike.
Additionally, we have not scheduled any meetings with the government that could result in the suspension of the intended strike,” the statement said.
The NLC expressed their appreciation for Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong’s intervention in releasing the National Union of Road Transport Workers executives from police detention.
However, they disagreed with the ministry’s description of the executives as “factional leaders”. Despite their respect for the ministry, the NLC emphasized that this matter extends beyond the ministry’s jurisdiction.
